(The right is day riders only.) Kings Mountain State & National Military Park sits on a small rocky spur of the Blue Ridge that rises 150 above the surrounding area. This is the site where the Battle of Kings Mountain was fought & won on October 7, 1780, in less than an hour by about 900 mounted backwoodsmen from VA., NC, SC, GA & what is now TN. This highly independent group of Patriot militiamen, led by Col. William Campbell from VA. fought 1100 highly trained Loyalists led by Scottsman Col. Patrick Ferguson who was the only Britt in the battle. The rest of the fighters were American against American. The battle of Kings Mountain is considered to be the turning point of the Revolutionary War. With Ferguson’s defeat & death the British Cornwallis retreated from Charlotte down into SC & ultimately to Yorktown where the Americans achieved total victory. These victorious Patriots were called Over Mountain Men, & the trails they took from VA down through TN, NC & SC., terminating at Kings Mountain became known as the Over Mountain Victory Trail. As we ride these Park trails, we will think of & be grateful to these brave Patriots whose rigorous march to this site, & whose gallant victory probably preempted our being British subjects today.
