Ride Information
VIRGINIA HIGHLANDS COMPETITIVE TRAIL RIDE NATRC-SANCTIONED July 10, 11, 2010 Type “A” Ride Open/Novice/CP; Type “B” One-day ride Open/Novice/CP on Saturday July 10 only Vet judge: Heather Colby, DVM Horsemanship judge: Kim Cowart • Open with pace 4-6 miles per hour, Novice and CP with pace 3.5-5 miles per hour. • Open/Novice/CP “A” ride on Saturday and Sunday; 33 miles Saturday for Open, 17 miles Sunday; 17 miles Saturday and 17 miles Sunday Novice/CP. • Open/Novice/CP “B” ride on Saturday only; 25 miles Open, 17 miles Novice/CP. ENTRY FEES: • $100.00 (same fee for one-day or two-day), non-NATRC members add $20. See Camping fees below. MEALS: • There will be two potluck dinners, one on Friday and one on Saturday evening. Bring a dish for the potlucks. Management will provide drinks, paper products, and all meals for ride staff and volunteers. COURSE: • Trails are a combination of woods trails and forest service dirt roads; water on trail; two 2-mile inclines and several gradual inclines and descents. Virginia terrain can be quite rocky, therefore, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that all horses be all-four shod. A licensed farrier will be on grounds. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED WHILE MOUNTED. CAMPING and STALLS (please make all arrangements through Judith Shrum, Ride Manager): • Camping will be at Iron Mountain Horse Camp (http://www.ironmountainhorsecamp.com; owners Danny and Sheila Odom, 4449 Arrowhead Drive, Ivanhoe, Virginia 24350; 276-744-2056 or 276-237-2600 ; or email info@ironmountainhorsecamp.com.). Danny and Sheila invite you to come early before the ride or stay late after the ride and make this your vacation! • Electric and water campsites for $25 per night per trailer; no primitive primitive camping available; $15 per night per horse in stalls with bedding provided. All horses must be stalled. • Hot/cold showers are available in the bath house. Hot/cold water available for washing horses. Camp fires are permitted at your camp. Dogs must be in hand/on or on a leash at all times. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult while in camp. Tack shop on premises. RIDE NOTES: • Original negative Coggins within the past 12 months. Health certificate required for out of state riders. • Rider check-in at 1:00 on Friday July 9; Pre-ride vet check at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Saturday morning check-in must be pre-arranged with ride management. • Awards Sunday evening. DIRECTIONS: Do not use Map Quest directions as they may take you over roads that are not suitable for horse trailers. Coming from NORTH: Take I-81 South, get off at exit 80 (Fort Chiswell); turn left onto 52 South for 1 mile; at lights, turn right onto Route 94 South for 15 miles; turn right on Brush Creek Rd. (at Brush Creek Store) – do not turn left on 602 before the store. Go 5 miles, turn left onto Arrowhead Dr.; entrance to camp is on right. Coming from SOUTH: Take I-77 North to I-81 juncture; turn left (west) and follow I-81 to Fort Chiswell exit (#80). From this point, follow same directions as above.
