Rocky Creek ATV

4637 Hwy 341 Culloden, Ga. 31016. Go up Hwy 341 north. You will come to that little convenience store on the corner of hwy 74 and 341 north. Keep going straight and it is probably a half mile to a mile maybe on the left. Has a big sign Rocky creek ATV Trail.

They charge for horse not rider. I think you also can camp primitively without paying extra. They have hot showers and concessions and 20 miles of trails. The numbers to reach them are as follows: 770-358-1454 or 478-885-2296. They are open from 9 am to 4;30 pm. They close it after 4;30 so no one new can come into the camp but the riders on the trails already are welcome to finish their rides. And of course if you are camping there. The camps are in shady pecan tree area with lots of green grass for the horses to enjoy also.

The owners are real nice and asked us for suggestions to making it a better trail place. So if you see something you think can be improved on they want the input so they can get it done. There are wooden bridges and ponds and a lot of creek areas you can cross. It does get slippery when it rains a lot because it is all red clay dirt trails in the wooded areas. They plan to open it again October 21 and want to start doing it year round if it looks like people will come.

Sandy Creek Park,  Athens, GA

Sandy Creek is a lovely county park with about 8 miles of wooded trails.  The trail is very well marked and has some small hills and streams to be crossed which should not be a problem for any of our horses.  There are a few rocky areas, but mostly horses could go without shoes.

Recently, volunteers have been working on the trails to improve and expand them to make a new loop. They have also installed a hitching rail for lunch stops.

Directions to Sandy Creek Park

From the by-pass around Athens, take the Commerce exit  (Hwy 441 North).  Watch for Sandy Creek Park signs and turn right on Bob Holman Road.

Coming south on Hwy 441, watch for Sandy Creek Park signs and turn left on Bob Holman Road.

After turning onto Bob Holman Road, go approximately 1/2 mile to Sandy Creek Park entrance on the right.  Check-in.  Pay $2 ride/parking fee and show Coggins papers. They will direct you to the trail parking.

Bull Mountain Trail, Dahlonega, GA

These trails can be relatively steep in a few places.  There are many rocky sections so your horse should be shod or have protective boots.  There will be mountain bikers on the trail.  Water will be present in several places but there's no water at the parking area, so bring a bucket and water for your horse.  Great vistas!

Croft State Park,  Spartanburg, SC

If you’re seeking diversity, five trails of varying difficulty and length in Croft State Natural Area should keep you busy.  The trails have portions of singlewide and doublewide, which range in difficulty from moderate to strenuous. The 3.5-mile Rocky Ridge Trail and the 6.5-mile Foster's Mill Loop are considered strenuous.  The 2.4-mile Lake Johnson Loop, 3.5-mile Fairforest Creek Loop and the 4.5-mile LakeJohnson/Fairforest Creek connector are considered moderate. The surface is a mixture of rocky root systems with some boggy spots that may be closed during rainy weather.  Horses should be shod.

Once part of a World War II Army training camp, this 7,054-acre park includes forgotten military structures, an old gristmill and cemeteries from earlier settlers. But the park’s greatest asset is its land: Rolling terrain, hills, and creeks provide a fertile habitat for numerous deer, fox, wild turkeys, and raccoons.

The park has excellent equestrian facilities including 54 horse stalls with fresh shavings available every night.
